Beckett Culp: Giving Back to His Community

By: Hannah Peri

Beckett Culp's story began when he was just six months old. At a routine checkup, he was diagnosed with a rare and serious medical condition called Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. In this condition, the body does not make enough AAT, a protein that protects the lungs and liver from damage. For Beckett, this diagnosis ultimately led to liver cirrhosis.

In 2022, nearly two and a half years after his diagnosis, Beckett and his family received a call they will never forget. After being on the transplant list for two months, Beckett was assigned a donor and received a transplant at Riley Hospital for Children.

Just recently, Beckett was named a 2024 Riley Champion! Beckett continues to be an inspiration for all who encounter his remarkable spirit and legendary hugs! For Beckett, being a Riley Champion is not just about his triumphs but also about giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his treatment.

Beckett continues to have routine checkups with his doctors at Riley Hospital for Children. He loves playing outside with his two siblings, collecting Hot Wheels, and is excited to start Kindergarten this fall!  Beckett and his family are appreciative of everything Riley Hospital for Children has done to help allow Beckett to continue to be the funny, loving, and awesome kid that he is!
